A pilot overview

This September, we wrapped our first pilot at Bratislava Airport (Slovakia), kicking off phase one of the SafeTravellers pilots – which will be completed in November!

The unique SafeTravellers solution, spanning 10 technologies gathered in a Traveller and a Border Guard App, is tested based on its ability to provide a privacy-protecting seamless travel solution to speed up border crossing, lower workload for border guards, and enhance overall security. The first phase of pilots (September-November 2025) focuses on systems integration and technology testing in key use cases, covering increasingly challenging air, land and rail operational environments. After further laboratory testing to refine the solution based on initial results, the second phase of pilots (January-June 2026) will focus on system testing and demonstrating system performance to border guard stakeholders across 4 environments: air, land, maritime and rail. Find out more about each pilot with our detailed overview below!

All pilots will test key use cases of our final solution on both traveller and border guard sides by simulating a border crossing, covering:

(-) Validation of the identification carried by the traveller, a document or electronic credential,

(-) Identification of the traveller to check their right to hold the document or electronic credential,

(-) Establishing the traveller’s right to cross the border, and,

(-) Completion of formalities (paperwork or electronic) before a traveller is permitted to cross the border.

Testing will include cases where the Project simulates fraudulent forms of identification and individuals using genuine forms of identification that belong to other people to test the reliability of the solution.

Border Guard stakeholders are invited to attend the Phase 2 of pilots in 2026 as external observers and provide additional user feedback, within the constraints of numbers of available observer roles in the pilot environments. The technologies that will be demonstrated, including fingerprint reading and a tool to collect threat intelligence, also have wider relevance to Law Enforcement applications.

Pilot 1 – Attacking biometrics at the airports (Slovakia)

Pilot one focuses on addressing the challenge of rising biometric attacks in aviation identity management highlighted by IATA. It showcases innovative technologies integrated in a traveller and border guard app to secure both biometric samples and sensing devices. The SafeTravellers ID Wallet, Frictionless ID checks, Morphing Attack countermeasures, Presentation Mimic and Manipulation Attack countermeasures, and Look-Alike and Makeup Attack countermeasures were tested and demonstrated in a controlled environment during pilot phase 1. It aims to enhance border security, streamline identification, and reduce manual checks for a seamless travel experience for EU/TCN citizens. Interested? Join us for Phase 2!

Pilot 2 – Fraudulent identity and travel document at sea and land borders (Romania)

The rising risk of identity and travel document fraud is met with advanced solutions in SafeTravellers, including image processing, deep learning algorithms, and a Mobile Passport based on Self-Sovereign Identity Management (SSI). These measures enhance digitalization, protect citizens’ identity, and combat criminal activities, addressing the evolving landscape of document fraud. Only occurring during pilot phase 2, this pilot will not only showcase the threat detection abilities of the SafeTravellers solution but also its mobility and performance in challenging open-air environments.

Pilot 3 – New way of identification at the land borders and within vehicles (Finland)

SafeTravellers addresses land border challenges, offering accurate identity verification using multiple biometrics and a Mobile Passport based on SSI Management. This ensures a swift and secure travel experience, reducing delays and enhancing trust in digital identity and travel documents. This new step in identification at land borders leverages fraud attack detection and AI supported threat intelligence to support border guards and travellers with secure frictionless identification checks.

Pilot 4 – Enhanced current identification at train stations and inside trains (France)

SafeTravellers tackles identity verification challenges in train stations and on trains, aiming for a more secure and user-friendly travel experience. The Project focuses on reducing identity check times, boosting Law Enforcement Agencies’ (LEAs’) productivity, and enhancing cross-border rail travel efficiency with innovations like Frictionless Identification checks and a Mobile Passport. Pilot 4 will involve simulated scenarios that will also consider fraud detection capabilities with simulations of various railway situations involving different lighting and connectivity settings.
