World Border Security Congress 2025: SafeTravellers from concept to pilots

At the last edition of the World Border Security Congress, Willem Mudde (European Association of Air and Seaport Police) and Stefan Fuhrmann (Idemia) gave an update on project progress and presented our cutting-edge technologies.

What we learned

In 2024, more than 70 participants helped to define end-user requirements for the project technologies. For the past year, technical partners have worked to adapt the final technologies to fit practitioner needs, from user-friendliness to adaptability. The final architecture was designed to fit compliance, security, and efficiency standards set by end users last year, including high privacy protection measures, explainability for AI components, and productivity measures to meet the modern border management challenges (multiple passports holders, mobility requirements…).

What we provide

To redefine border crossing as a safe, efficient and seamless experience, two apps were developed to fit border guard and traveller needs across the different phases of digital identity management.

Through the Traveller App, European citizens and third country nationals (TCN) can simplify border crossing from the comfort of their home. By extracting biometric data from their passport, they can receive a digital travel credential (DTC) which can be checked at border check points instead of physical passports for a smoother and faster experience. Travellers can then enjoy this  seamless identification by validating the stored biometric data with a live check performed directly from the app, which will issue a travel token before their trip.

This token will enable border guards to perform 1:1 multi biometric matching at the border, for a streamlined processing of travellers thanks to our Border Guard App. Various technologies will assist border authorities in detecting identity fraud and attacks on biometric systems with explainable results expressed in a clear output. With groundbreaking security features including multibiometric identification, attestation services to detect communication and sensor attacks, score fusion and explainable AI to detect document attacks, and attack detection (including manipulation and presentation attacks, morphing and similarity attacks and known threats), SafeTravellers is the next step in digital identity thanks to robust and practical identity verification enabled by innovative research.

As a unique platform for mobile and static devices, SafeTravellers apps are built to support the widest range of border crossing scenarios with state-of-the-art security across challenging environments. Looking for more information on our technologies? Click here!

How we will show it

Four pilots are planned to demonstrate the developed technologies across 4 environments: land, rail, maritime and air. The following use cases will be tested:

(-) Attacking biometrics at the airport (Pilot 1)

(-) Fraudulent identity and travel document at sea and land borders (Pilot 2)

(-) New way of identification at the land borders and within vehicles (Pilot 3)

(-) Enhanced current identification at train stations and inside trains (Pilot 4)
