SafeTravellers takes part in two events of the Darmstadt Biometrics Week 2026: the EABxCERIS event on 15 September, with a presentation from Pilots Coordinator, Willem Mudde from EAASP, in the Interactive Project Showcase and a demonstration in the closing demo session, and the EAB Research Projects Conference on 16–17 September, where Davide Antonutti and Justin Ilyes (AIT) present the project’s work on face morphing detection.
Darmstadt Biometrics Week gathers three events over four days at Fraunhofer IGD, convened by the European Association for Biometrics (EAB), a SafeTravellers consortium partner and leader of the project’s dissemination, communication and exploitation work. It opens on Monday 14 September with the workshop of the German Biometrics Working Group of TeleTrusT, held in cooperation with EAB. SafeTravellers does not contribute to this session, which is held mainly in German and focuses on deployed applications, standardisation and regulatory perspectives in Germany.
Tuesday 15 September
The second EABxCERIS edition, organised by EAB with the European Commission under the Community for European Research and Innovation for Security. It widens the scope of the first edition beyond border management to include the fight against crime and terrorism and disaster resilient societies.
The programme opens with reality-check interventions on shared challenges across the three domains, followed by the Interactive Project Showcase and four parallel deep-dive sessions (biometrics in degraded environments, speed versus accuracy versus legal constraints, multisource and multimodal identity, and human factors and trust) each producing a shortlist of challenges, R&I needs and recommendations for future programmes. The day closes with a demo session.
During the Interactive Project Showcase, Willem Mudde (European Association of Airport & Seaport Police), pilots coordinator, presents the identity fraud problem the project addresses: document falsification, morphing and spoofing at points where identity is verified; the operational context across the four pilot environments, airport, railway, land border and maritime; and the lessons emerging from the validation activities, in particular what running one framework across four settings revealed that no single pilot would have surfaced alone.
In the demo session, Justin Ilyes from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology present the project’s work on face morphing generation and detection. The demonstration is aimed at border authorities, document issuing authorities and forensic examiners, and is an opportunity to discuss detection at the enrolment and verification stages directly with the team.

Wednesday 16 – Thursday 17 September
The thirteenth EAB-RPC, organised by EAB with the Joint Research Centre and the support of DG HOME and Fraunhofer IGD is the largest European forum on EU-funded research in biometrics and identity management. This edition brings together Horizon Europe and national research projects with featured speakers from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, eu-LISA and the Canada Border Services Agency, and a panel on standards development roadmaps in EU-funded projects.
Two project representatives from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Davide Antonutti and Justin Ilyes, will present Injection Attacks and Synthetic Identity: Face Morphing Detection in SafeTravellers on Thursday 17 September at 14:30 , in a project session shared with AutoBorder, PopEye and PRIVIDEMA.
Their presentation addresses morphing at the two points where it can enter a biometric system, enrolment and verification, together with the injection of synthetic and manipulated facial imagery into the capture stream, and sets out the detection work carried out in SafeTravellers. It closes on the problem the field has yet to resolve: detection performance that holds when the morph was produced by an algorithm the detector has not seen.
