SafeTravellers invites practitioners, policymakers, border security stakeholders, and other relevant stakeholders to the Phase 2 demonstration of one of its four pilots: the rail border control validation campaign. Hosted by project partner the International Union of Railways (UIC) at their headquarters in Paris, the demonstration takes place on Thursday 11 June 2026, following two days of internal preparation and rehearsal by the consortium, and building on the technical testing completed in Phase 1 (November 2025).
The SafeTravellers integrated framework demonstration to external audience will take place in a simulated, indoor controlled environment enabling realistic, hands-on observation of the system’s capabilities in conditions representative of actual rail border control operations, without the constraints of a live operational deployment. The detailed agenda is available below.
The event will showcase the full mobile end-to-end SafeTravellers workflow. In fact, the demonstration covers the full range of technologies developed within the SafeTravellers project: ten solutions working together as an integrated framework, with a particular focus on mobile and on-the-move identification suited to the rail environment. These span four areas:
• Identity verification and frictionless crossing: Digital Travel Credential creation and validation, mobile passport, multi-biometric verification and fusion, and frictionless identification for both EU citizens and third-country nationals.
• Fraud and attack detection: detection of identity document fraud, morphing attack prevention, look-alike and makeup attack detection, and enablers for tackling presentation and manipulation attacks.
• System integrity and privacy: defending against sensor interception and TOCTOU attacks, and security and privacy by design for the European Multi-Biometric Data Space.
• Situational awareness and decision support: threat intelligence based on unusual events and patterns, and an XAI-based recommendation engine that provides border guards with explainable, auditable risk assessments.
Volunteer travellers will undergo border checks during a simulated train journey using the SafeTravellers system, from scanning their travel document and enrolling biometrically, to presenting their Digital Travel Credential and receiving a verification outcome via the border guard’s mobile application.
Attendees will be able to follow the process from both sides: the traveller’s experience and the border guard’s dashboard. Technical partners will be present throughout to walk through the system, answer questions and discuss the technology in depth.
